The Atkins diet
This is probably one of the most popular diets of all time. It promotes almost complete avoidance of sugar and carbohydrates. The diet is started by severely restricting carbs during a diet phase called induction where the body is shocked into burning fat for energy by being deprived of high glycemic carbs such as flour, sugar and high fructose corn syrup.
After induction, a few more carbs are allowed but generally the Atkins dieter is supposed to avoid all sugars and most refined starch like the plague. Instead the dieter feasts on protein and fats liberally. It is common to see an Atkins dieter wolf down greasy meat patties with bacon and eggs for breakfast, however the diet itself discourages excess fat although some fat is not considered a problem. Of course, no bread is usually eaten.
The Atkins Diet is meant to be a lifetime change. One is not supposed to complete a few phases and then revert to eating sugars and starches. The idea is to keep going on with life while avoiding carbohydrates as much as possible.
