Low Carb diets.
Low carb diets have been around long before Dr. Atkins popularized his own version of said lifestyle. One of the first and perhaps the very first book in popular literature was written in England by an undertaker titled "On the issue of Corpulence". The author weighed more than 200 lbs when he started experiencing health problems. He could no longer lean over and tie his own shoelaces and his hearing was troubled with the excess of flesh pressing into different body parts and organs. The man was a mess!
This undertaker, Mr. William Banting was literally exploding. His abdomen had suffered a rupture related to the navel, he was losing his vision and hearing and could not climb stairs properly due to excess fat. This was just while he was in his thirties. Banting was willing to try anything, he consulted with many doctors but none could come up with a plan that worked until one of them recommended a diet. Until one doctor who had just arrived back from a medical convention in Paris, at that time a world center of advanced medicine.
This doctor advised banting to completely eliminate sugar from his diet and drastically reduce starch and flour products. Banting was eager to try anything and was amazed to discover that within a few days he was feeling much better and sleeping more soundly. He realized there was something special about this diet and continued on it. He was losing an average of about 1 lb per week on this diet.
A long time after Banting's book was published there was another low carb revolution in the works. Dr. Atkins, a physician wrote a bestseller which basically followed a similar theme with a few differences the most notable of which was an "induction period" of three weeks or so, during which time absolutely no sugar or starch could be consumed. Generous amounts of fat are usually consumed by people on the Atkins diet.
